Drunk, bared, free, bacchanalian,
- but with black mask - you are dancing
the pointless dance of sorrow.

O mirth disguised! you with cheerfulness disguised grief!
o happy crying! and dance under sobbing cymbals!
- and night conceived in gloom, but with blazing -white
rain illuminated - Rain! o clown in funeral carnivals!

And you are flying - beams and laughter, - and you are white, crazy,
on the pavements dancing water! -
night rain, drifted in noisy dance
over catafalque black of the city.
